Banana chips and Malayalis are inseparable... Earlier it was on special occasions that this tasty item graced the menu. Now a days, one could buy it from any of the supermarkets or bakery. Specialized chips shops will give you fresh hot chips...

Paathira Poovu

"Thiruvathira " is the festival of Hindu women of Kerala - it is more like the Karwa Chaut of  the North Indians. On this day, which falls on the full moon day of the Malayalam month Dhanu (December- January), the wives pray for the long life of husbands and young women pray for suitable husbands.

It is essentially the celebration to commemorate the penance of Goddess Parvathi for getting Lord Shiva as her husband. On this day, women fast and perform many rituals. One of the ritual is wearing the "Paathira poovu" (featured below) at midnight

Bharatapuzha

Bharatapuzha -also known as Nila or Perar is the second longest river of Kerala. It has been an inevitable part of the history and culture of the South Malabar area of Kerala. Sadly, it is dying due to indiscriminate sand mining. It is said that the sand from Bharatapuzha is the best for construction. Hence, it has spelled doom for the river. What used to be a full free flowing mighty river has now turned into a rivulet with lots of tiny, bushy island and shrubs growing in the middle.
