It is essentially the celebration to commemorate the penance of Goddess Parvathi for getting Lord Shiva as her husband. On this day, women fast and perform many rituals. One of the ritual is wearing the "Paathira poovu" (featured below) at midnight

Yeah I know... In my childhood, this was a rare spectacle. One had to search a lot for a bunch. But this time when I went home, it had bloomed in plenty... It was a lovely sight too!
